Hugh Masekela‚ Kumi Naidoo to get honorary doctorates from UKZN

Music legend Hugh Masekela‚ former head of Green Peace International Kumi Naidoo‚ retired Durban judge Thumba Pillay and entrepreneur Wendy Luhabe will be conferred with honorary doctorates by the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

The university also announced on Wednesday - ahead of its graduation season between April 3 and 12 - that doctoral graduates rose from 150 to 350 in the last five years while research masters graduates increased from 260 to 625 during the same period.

Over 10 000 certificates will be awarded at 23 graduation ceremonies.

“UKZN will honour the four leading South Africans for their significant contributions in the fields of arts‚ social science‚ law and business.

Trumpeter Masekela has been nominated for a Grammy award and is a veteran in the local and international jazz industry.

Naidoo is known for his international activism at Green Peace where he campaigned extensively for environmental rights. He resigned from the organisation in 2015.

“Through their innovation‚ expertise and intellect in their respective fields‚ the honorary graduands have changed the lives of people both in South Africa and around the world‚” said university spokesman Normah Zondo.
