A primary school was burned down in the early hours of Thursday in Vuwani‚ Limpopo in renewed demarcation protests in the area.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Moatshe Moepe confirmed that Tshirhunzani primary school in Vyeboom‚ Vuwani had been torched.
"We can confirm that books and a few possessions were burned by unknown suspects this morning. The good news is that there were no learners at the scene [as] it is in the middle of school holidays. The police are monitoring the scene and there is calm in the community. It is totally quiet.”
Basic education department spokesman Elijah Mhlanga earlier broke news of the incident in a Twitter post.
The Pro-Makhado demarcation task team said it had noted "with disdain" the attempts to torch the school and strongly condemned the "criminal act".
"We appreciate the efforts made by community members who acted on time to alert the police‚ when on the other hand extinguishing the fire in ensuring that the treasure and the future of our children is protected and safeguarded.
"The demarcation team would like to urge the community members of Vuwani to come forward with information in ensuring that we bring these perpetrators to book."
Vuwani was frequently in the news last year due to violent protests which left more than 20 schools destroyed or damaged.
