KZN not spared in cash heist spree

A gang of armed men made off with nearly R400‚000 in cash after a brazen cash-in-transit heist at Inanda’s Dube Village Mall on Tuesday afternoon.

This followed a separate incident in Bulwer in the KZN Midlands in which cash guards were also robbed at gunpoint. The two robberies come during a spate of similar heists which have left a number of guards dead and millions in stolen loot still missing.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said that in Inanda‚ an armed security guard had been in the process of loading an ATM.

“As he was opening the ATM cubicle door with an electronic smart lock key he was approached by three unidentified suspects. The suspects produced firearms and at gunpoint robbed him of a cash box and a firearm‚” she said.

She said that the men had fired several shots as they escaped‚ and that no arrests had been made.

Earlier‚ guards had been collecting money from a business in Bulwer when they were accosted by two gunmen.

“No shots were fired and no injuries were sustained during the robbery. A case of armed robbery was opened at Bulwer police station. No arrests have been made‚” she said.
