Ross Brawn is one of the great legends of Formula 1. An engineer and team principal who helped the likes of Benetton, Ferrari and Mercedes win many a Constructor's Championship. He also masterminded Brawn F1: that here today, sold tomorrow team that against all odds gave Jenson button his first Driver's Championship back in 2009.
Clearly he's a man who knows what it takes to win in this ultra competitive form of motorsport. Which is why, according to reports on both and , the 61-year-old Briton has just signed a contract with series owners Liberty Media to become the new Sporting Boss of Formula 1. What does this mean exactly?
Well aside from becoming the sport's new "outward face," Brawn will now be responsible for overseeing technical and sporting regulations as well as acting as a liaison between the teams and the FIA (Federation Internationale de l'Automobile).
Bernie Ecclestone, the undead CEO of Formula 1, will, for the next three years at least, remain in charge of the sport's commercial interests. Bummer. Be this as it may we still think that the appointing of Brawn as Sporting Boss is excellent news. Another small step that should re-inject some much-needed sense and direction into a sport that seems to have lost its way. – Thomas Falkiner
