Nico Rosberg has today stunned the motorsport world by announcing his retirement from Formula 1. The 31-year-old Mercedes driver won his first title at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix last Sunday, beating his teammate and chief rival, Lewis Hamilton, by five points.
“Since 25 years in racing, it has been my dream, my ‘one thing’ to become Formula One World Champion," Rosberg said in a Facebook post this afternoon. "Through the hard work, the pain, the sacrifices, this has been my target. And now I’ve made it. I have climbed my mountain, I am on the peak, so this [his retirement] feels right. My strongest emotion right now is deep gratitude to everybody who supported me to make that dream happen."
The son of Keke Rosberg who won the F1 World Championship back in 1982, Nico Rosberg has been in the sport since 2007 when he made his debut with the Williams team. “Now, I’m just here to enjoy the moment," he concluded.
