With the latest iterations of the X5 and X6 launched, it was only a matter of time before BMW announced the fiery M versions of the duo.

The high-performance X5M and X6M were first introduced to the world in 2009. Of course, everyone scoffed at the frivolous idea of a high-performance, M-badged SUV. But the brutish BMW pair quickly endeared themselves to petrolheads, thanks to their brash aesthetics and eye-watering performance.

Both vehicles are powered by a 4.4-litre V8 engine as before, strapped with two turbochargers. But power has gone up by 10 percent, according to BMW, which takes the figures up to 423kW and 750Nm.

That gain in power would not be complete without a commensurate gain in economy and the M models are more efficient, with a claimed fuel consumption of 11.1l/100km versus 13.9l/100km in the old model. BMW claims a 0-100km/h time of 4.2 seconds. An eight-speed transmission replaces the six-speed unit of old. Also, this new mill has bragging rights: it’s the most powerful unit ever developed by BMW for one of their all-wheel drive vehicles.

As expected, the cabin is adorned with all the BMW M accoutrements you could want. You’ll spot their racy three-spoke steering wheel, replete with paddle shifters as well as sport seats with integrated headrests like you’ll find in the current BMW M3 and M4.

New BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M customers will also be able to pick various options, such as 21-inch M light-alloy wheels, merino full-leather trim and M multifunction seats. And there’s also a choice of two new and exclusive M paint finishes. The new BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M will go on sale in South Africa in April 2015.
