There are choices if you’re after a premium saloon that isn’t German, with new players like the Ford Fusion and Honda Accord serving as alternatives. Subaru plays in this ambit with the Legacy – and order books have opened for the new model.

Although we’re yet to drive it, we’ve seen it in the flesh. And the latest Legacy has grown substantially over the model it replaces. The model has taken a different direction over the mandate of its predecessor from two generations back, assuming a plusher, softer persona. Let’s bear in mind that the American market is a lucrative space for Subaru. And this appears suited to that kind of palate.

Power comes from a 3.6-litre, six-cylinder engine producing 191kW and 350Nm. This is mated to Subaru’s Lineartronic continuously variable transmission. It also has the Si-Drive system with its assortment of driving modes. Of course, power is sent to all four wheels. At present this is the only derivative available in our market. As is usually the case when it comes to Subaru’s top-tier versions, standard kit is plentiful. The 3.6R costs R530,000 and a three-year/75,000-kilometre maintenance plan is included.
