Porsche sold the last of the limited-edition 918 Spyder supercar, the German company’s most expensive model, and Americans snapped up more than anyone else.

US customers bought 297 of the car, with Germany and China accounting for about 100 vehicles each, the Stuttgart-based unit of Volkswagen said today in a statement.

Production of the plug-in hybrid racer was limited to 918 vehicles to underscore the exclusivity of the car and the brand. Deliveries started in March, and Porsche Chief Executive Officer Matthias Mueller predicted in June that the 918 would be sold out by the end of the year, saying it would be “unfair” to build more than the number planned.

The 918 Spyder, unveiled at the September 2013 International Auto Show in Frankfurt, can reach 100 kilometres an hour in 2.5 seconds and has a claimed consumption figure of 4.2l/100km. That tops the 5.5l/100km consumption of the basic Prius hybrid from Toyota.

Porsche has forecast that it will deliver 200,000 vehicles a year for the first time in 2015, driven by demand for the Macan compact sport-utility vehicle introduced this year. Global 11-month sales rose 15% from a year earlier to a record 169,205 cars, Porsche said.
