Longer runway means more noise, residents told

An environmental impact study on Cape Town International Airport's proposed runway upgrade warns that neighbouring residents would be seriously affected by increased noise. Airports Company of SA plans include extending one of the two runways to increase the airport's capacity.The report, by engineering firm SRK Consulting, was published for public comment yesterday.It notes that there would be increased noise for residents in Khayelitsha, Nyanga, Philippi and Bellville.The plan is to upgrade the primary runwayto create more landing space for bigger planes and permit further expansion of the airport should the need arise.As a result of the increased noise, the report proposes that Acsa should "maintain effective communication with affected public regarding noise".An initial scoping report was opened for public comment last July, and Acsa expressed concern about the small number of comments from affected parties...
