Guinea's opposition leader told The Associated Press that four people were killed by security forces during an opposition march after riot police intervened to disperse the protesters.

Cellou Dalein Diallo said by telephone that he deplores the crack down on a demonstration that had been preapproved by the government. He said one of the four bodies was dumped in front of the headquarters of his party, the Union for the Democratic Forces of Guinea, or UFDG.

The other three had been taken to the morgue at the Ignace Deen Hospital in downtown Conakry.

Cmdr. Aliou Diakite, a spokesman for the ministry of defense, said that 23 paramilitary police officers were hospitalized with injuries after being hit by rocks thrown by supporters of the opposition.
