President Jacob Zuma has returned from a Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit on regional peace and security in Tanzania, his office said on Sunday.

"The summit has reaffirmed the commitment of our region to collectively pursue regional peace and stability, particularly with regard to the security situation in the eastern DRC," said Zuma.

South Africa's delegation included International Relations and Co-operation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane.

Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni, who chairs the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, reported on the evolving situation in the eastern part of the DRC.

South Africa was commended for its pledge of logistical support for the SADC standby force, under the auspices of the Neutral International Force, to which all SADC member states contribute as a bloc.

A mediator's report on Madagascar was received.

The summit re-emphasised the need to fully implement Madagascar's roadmap to elections, which was agreed by Malagasy political parties last year.

A report on the facilitation process in Zimbabwe was also received.
