Residents of Nyamira County in Kenya were left shocked on Thursday after the body of a woman who died before her dowry was settled was exhumed.

According to reports, police supervised the exhumation.

Alice Kemunto Bundi was four months pregnant at the time of her death. She was buried on Tuesday, only for her family to obtain an exhumation permit from a court on grounds that they were not informed about or involved in her burial arrangements.

The cause of her death remained unclear, although some witnesses were quoted by Standard as saying she died during an unsafe abortion.

According to the area chief, Bundi had been married for over six years. Her in-laws confirmed that the dowry had not been settled.

"We had given them [Bundi's family] one cow and KES 5 000 cash, though they were asking for KES 20 000," said one of the in-laws interviewed by NTV.
