Zimbabwean Tourism and Hospitality Minister Walter Mzembi has blasted local newspapers for only "concentrating" on political fights engulfing the country, reports said on Thursday.
According to the state-owned Herald newspaper, Mzembi said this was reflecting badly on the country, as the reports portrayed Zimbabwe as being "unstable".
Mzembi said that politics was "newsworthy", but that local newspapers should also report on other developmental issues in order to boost the country's tourism sector.
Mzembi said that most of the daily newspapers in the country had turned into "party tabloids".
"Today we have found that the media have been the lead for deconstructing or de-branding Zimbabwe through the news item that they publish. We have different types of news in our midst, which is not only political. We hope the media could be democratic to the extent of also covering developmental issues and other accomplishments that are taking place in the country," Mzembi was quoted as saying.
Mzembi's comments came at the back of Higher and Tertiary Education Minister Jonathan Mayo's attacks on the Herald, as he queried the newspaper's coverage of ruling Zanu-PF party infighting.
According to the Daily News, Moyo’s Twitter post came as the Herald seemed to be under pressure to take a position in favour of a Zanu-PF faction behind Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa's "presidential ambitions".
Moyo posted on his Twitter page:
It is as curious as it is concerning that @HeraldZimbabwe now has references to "the anti-Mnangagwa cabal in Zanu PF". What or who is that?
