A 13-year-old pupil at Joy Max Academy in Eldoret, Kenya suffered bruises after a teacher beat him for writing a love letter to a girl at the same school.

The Standard 7 pupil, identified only as Samuel, was beaten with a wire after the girl reported the incident to the teacher.

"He took a wire and started beating me everywhere and kicking my head. Then he whipped me on the neck. When I started bleeding, he got shocked," explained Samuel, adding that the headteacher organised for a private doctor to attend to him.

A clip aired on NTV showed bruises on the boy's back, thighs and neck, with the responsible teacher saying that the school did not contact his parents about the incident because they were scared of their reaction.

Samuel's father said he had since reported the matter to the police, according to The Star.

The incident took place just a week after reports emerged that a school for the deaf in Kiambu County was using police officers to punish students, sometimes even locking them up in cells.

One of the parents who spoke to the press at the school revealed that her son had suffered burns and fractures recently as part of disciplinary action.

Caning is illegal in Kenyan schools, following a ban that was effected in 2001 by the then Education Minister Kalonzo Musyoka.
