Samsung has launched a science academy in order to build up technical skills in South Africa – following last year’s matric’s poor physical science results.

Only 47.8% of students achieved a mark of 30% or more.

The Samsung Electronics Engineering Academy, which is located in Boksberg hopes that by tapping into young people’s love of gadgets it will be able to equip students with the skills they need to enter the job market.

The academy has signed participation agreements with four High schools in Katlehong and Vosloorus, and will take in more schools in coming years. These schools will have access to a state of the art Electronics Engineering Lab, and a technology rich area where students from grades 10 to 12 can learn in a hands-on manner.

Once they have graduated, students will also get a chance to compete for an internship at one of Samsung’s service centres.
