Sega's latest video for Aliens: Colonial Marines offers a slice of life aboard the cramped and xenomorph-infested confines of a space hulk, the USS Sulaco of Aliens and Alien 3.

Once scheduled for release between March and May, the team-based first-person shooter Aliens: Colonial Marines is now heading for an autumn 2012 arrival, sometime between September and November.

Depending upon the precise timing, that could put it on a collision course with plenty of the year's big names in gaming.

Too early during the period could see it caught up in the rush for sports titles, with annual updates to the F1, NFL, NBA, FIFA and Pro Evolution Soccer series due.

Too late and 2012's blockbusters will be monopolizing attention -- Tomb Raider, Hitman, Halo 4 and Resident Evil 6 are confirmed, with new versions of Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty least likely to skip the season, not forgetting Grand Theft Auto V.

There's even a chance that Aliens: Colonial Marines will come out around the same time as another game from the same developer, Gearbox Software, but courtesy of a different publisher.

The studio had a surprise hit in 2009 with Borderlands. Sequel Borderlands 2 has a tentative '2012' release date; it may well emulate its predecessor, which made the most of a risky late October launch.
