A total of 558 rhino have been killed since January, the environmental affairs department said on Thursday.

The Kruger National Park continued to bear the brunt with 351 rhino poached, spokeswoman Eleanor Momberg said in a statement.

Other affected areas included Limpopo which had 80 rhino poached, KwaZulu-Natal which had 48, North West with 37 and Mpumalanga with 24.

Last year the total number was at 1004.

Police have arrested 157 people in connection with the crimes, Momberg said.
