Renewable Energy Development Zones mooted

Cabinet has approved the gazetting of renewable energy development zones (REDZ) to help address the country's electricity shortage. Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe announced the gazetting on Thursday‚ promising they will streamline the regulatory process‚ identify geographical areas where wind and solar photovoltaic technologies can be incentivised and where deep grid expansion can be directed."These REDZ will ensure a transition to a low carbon economy‚ accelerate infrastructure development and contribute to a more coherent and predictable regulatory framework‚" Radebe said.But Democratic Alliance MP Gordon Mackay warned that the country is littered with development zones which have failed to bear fruit as they are not based on economic requirements but on political imperatives."The DA would prefer to see a comprehensive system of tax cuts and subsidies‚ which have been proven to work‚ rather than yet more high risk development zones. We are therefore cautious in our support and will monitor the performance of these zones closely‚" Mackay said...
