Sasco has denied reports that the organisation was divided by Julius Malema.

Sunday Times reported that the Walter Sisulu University in Mthatha SA Students' Congress (Sasco) was divided on who should be inaugurated on to the Student Representative Council. One Sasco faction is aligned to Malema, while the other is behind the SA Communist Party, it was reported.

However Sasco denies this. In a statement released Mbulelo Mandlana president of the organisation said: “Our structures are not divided, either by Malema or by anybody else.”

“As a matter of fact, comrade Julius Malema does not have the capacity to divide our structures,” he said.

Sasco secured seven of the 13 SRC seats last year, but they remain unfilled, as Sasco's provincial leadership, which is close to the Young Communist League (YCL), has recommended candidates other than those fielded by the Mthatha branch, which is pro-Malema.

Sasco said: “That the SRC at WSU had not been fully constituted is not related to any divisions but is purely a consequence of the failure of the student governance management to comply with the official pronunciations.”

“Our structures are busy mobilising students and society for our free education demand and are not willing to be distracted by unnecessary ANCYL squabbles,” Sasco said.

In the past week Sasco staged marches in various universities across South Africa to demand free education.
