Construction workers who helped build new stadiums for the Fifa World Cup will be rewarded with free tickets, Building and Wood Workers' International (BWI) said.

The free tickets were a victory for construction workers, who at times had to work in precarious situations and had struggled to have their labour recognised, the BWI said in a statement.

"The BWI would like to congratulate Fifa in keeping its promise of providing free tickets to the over 27,000 construction workers who played their part in ensuring that South Africa hosts a successful 2010 World Cup."

The BWI, and three of its affiliates, the National Union of Mineworkers, the SA Building Construction and Allied Workers' Union and the SA Building Workers' Organisation, negotiated with Fifa for the free tickets.

The tickets would be available to workers countrywide from May 17 to June 1 and letters would be issued informing workers where they could collect tickets, BWI spokeswoman Katrina Mseme said.
