Free State police say Naledi mayor Motlatsi Motloi, who was killed at his Wepener home, was shot twice in the back.

Colonel Sam Makhele says neighbours heard gunshots and ran outside to investigate at 8.30pm on Monday. "They saw the mayor fall down almost halfway to his doorway at his house on the corner of De Wet and Louw Streets."

Makhele said the engine of Motloi's vehicle was still running and the lights were still on. Police said the motive for the attack was not known. The case had been handed to Hawks in the Free State to investigate. Motloi was the ANC mayor of Naledi Municipality, which includes towns such as Wepener, Vanstadensrus and Dewetsdorp.
