A major hotel company is investigating why a woman employed at an exclusive North West spa was allegedly undressed and had her genitals searched after being accused of theft.

Sun International said in a statement that the incident took place at Gatsby International Health Spa, a concessionaire at Sun City.

It was brought to the attention of Sun City director of operations Jo Kentgens on June 29.

"Kentgens immediately launched a full investigation and offered counselling to the employees involved. Appropriate action will be taken once conclusive results of the investigation have been determined."

Sun International said those concerned were not employees of Sun International or Sun City, but of Gatsby International.

The search was conducted without the knowledge of Sun City.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions claimed Sun International and Sun City management were informed about the matter a month ago, but that nothing was done.

It alleged that a security company "humiliated" the woman after suspecting her of stealing R400 from a guest's room, Cosatu said in a statement.

"The poor woman was then searched in her private parts..."
