The DA in Gauteng was still waiting for the full report on why babies died at a Johannesburg public hospital in May, provincial health spokesman Jack Bloom said on Monday.

“Gauteng health MEC Qedani Mahlangu has failed to provide within the required 30 days, the full report of the investigation into the deaths of six babies at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital in May this year,” he said in a statement.

Six babies died at the hospital after norovirus spread, by contaminated hands, water or food, according to an abridged version of a report released by Mahlangu.

It also found a lack of routine supplies and equipment, such as towels and thermometers.

The investigators found no “specific acts of negligence” but the DA has asked for the entire report, which it says has not been forthcoming.

“I have received no response whatsoever to my application for this report in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act which I submitted on 22 July to the Gauteng Health Department.

“It is utterly inexplicable why she does not release the full report, rather than an inadequate two-page summary.”

A department spokesman was not immediately available to comment.
