A man was killed and another injured when lightning struck them in different areas of Midrand, says Johannesburg emergency services.

Spokesman Percy Morokane said the man who was killed was handing out pamphlets when it started raining and he sought shelter under a tree, where he was struck.

"He was burnt all over his body."

The second man was loading chains onto a vehicle around 5pm near Allandale Road when he was struck, Netcare 911 paramedics said.

The man, in his 20s, was treated on the scene and taken to a private hospital where he was in a serious but stable condition, spokesman Chris Botha said.

Morokane appealed to people not to seek shelter under trees during a storm.
