Eleven people were injured in a fire at the Formula One hotel in Meredale, opposite the Southgate mall, Johannesburg emergency services said.

Four were treated for minor burns and the others for smoke inhalation, spokeswoman Esther Manzini told Sapa.

The blaze started in a second floor room after 7am, where a couple was sleeping. The pair was among the injured.

"The room was fully burnt and the hotel was evacuated. The fire was contained before it could spread to the other rooms."

"Nine of the injured were taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and the others to Lesedi clinic."

The cause of the blaze was unknown, but fire safety officials were investigating the scene, on Colombine Avenue.

ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks said some people tied sheets together and climbed out of a window.

"Various ambulance units and firefighters were on-scene."
