Four people were killed when lightning struck as they were having a ceremony for a deceased man in Nyandeni, near Lebode in the Eastern Cape, the area's mayor said.

"Four people were killed and three others hospitalised when they were struck by lightning on Saturday," Nyandeni mayor, Thokozile Sokanyile, said.

She said they were having a ceremony a year after a woman's husband died when lightning struck between 2pm and 3pm.

Social development had gone to the families to do counselling and Sokanyile planned to go and visit them on Monday.

The mayor, however, said there was no further information available about the deceased at the moment.

Sokanyile said the incident comes after three members of a family were also killed nearby in Lebode on December 29 when their house was hit by lightning.
