The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) has no more room for first year students at its Tshwane campuses.

"All courses at the Soshanguve, Ga-Rankuwa and Pretoria campuses are full," TUT said in a statement on Wednesday.

"There are few spaces left at the faculty of the arts and the faculty of science. Officials at the two faculties are currently handling applications for remaining spaces and the picture can change as the day progresses."

There was limited space in the national diploma courses in fire technology, equine science, performing arts technology, vocal art: choral training, vocal art: performance, and vocal art: pedagogy.

"Owing to limited resources (infrastructure, facilities, number of academic staff), TUT can accommodate about 12,549 first-year students only.

"Also the University has to operate within the student enrolment plan as approved by the department of higher education and training."

The TUT, like the University of Johannesburg and the University of Limpopo, was inundated with late applications for the first year class of 2011.

The university on Wednesday reminded matriculants that the deadline for applications was in mid-August.

Before November 2010 the university received 32,188 applications from prospective first year students. It accepted 11,000 of these before the December recess.
