The case against a 42-year-old police sergeant linked to a break-in at the SAPS ballistics laboratory in Port Elizabeth was postponed, Eastern Cape police said.

Sergeant Tando Tshazibana was expected to appear in the city's magistrate's court again on February 2, Brigadier Miranda Mills said.

Tshazibana faces a charge of conspiracy to commit armed robbery and the "unlawful disclosure of information concerning a prohibited place".

He was arrested on Tuesday.

Five men entered the Eben Donges building in North End at 10pm on Sunday night and held security guards hostage. They went to the floor where testing of human fluids, specimens, drugs, DNA and ballistics takes place. They managed to disarm the alarm system and gained entry to the laboratory.

The group left the building around 1am on Monday in a white Isuzu bakkie. Nobody was injured and no shots were fired. After investigations, police found no firearms, ammunition, documentation or exhibits had been stolen.

Police intelligence revealed the criminals specifically targeted the chemical laboratory following a recent drug bust from Brazil.
