Alert: More rain expected in Pretoria

Authorities in Tshwane remain on high alert on Tuesday after reports of more heavy downpours which led to flooding in the Centurion area.

"We had a peaceful night. We are monitoring the water levels but so far there hasn't been any incident," said Tshwane community safety spokesman William Baloyi.

The last reported drowning was that of firefighter Henry Knox, after his canoe capsized on the Hennops River on Monday.

The Freedom Front Plus said it was "tragic" that Knox died while on duty trying to save another person's life.

The organisation expressed its heartfelt sympathy for his family and colleagues.

On Monday four people were rescued in separate incidents when they were swept away in their vehicles as the Hennops River pushed through Centurion, Pretoria.

Emergency personnel moved through the smallholdings along the river bank to make sure everybody was accounted for, after they started receiving worried calls after midnight on Monday as the river roiled through the farming belt.

The Centurion Lake Hotel's basement and reception area were flooded. There were no injuries at the time and cleanup operations were continuing on Tuesday. Hotel general manager Robert Hodson said on Monday the hotel would be up and running on Thursday.

There were no cars in the basement parking at the time of the flooding because management pre-empted the floods and removed them on Friday.

Guests were moved to the nearby Protea Hotel in Centurion and hotels in Sandton, Johannesburg.
