Transnet has reached a deal with trade unions for an 8,5% rise in wages, the company and the unions say.

The settlement between Transnet, the United Transport and Allied Trade Union (Utatu) and the smaller South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) is more than double the inflation rate, which stood at 4,2% in April.

Last year workers at Transnet went on a three-week strike over wages, which curbed exports of metals, cars, fruit and wine to Europe and Asia as well as imports of vehicle parts and fuel supplies.
