South Africans should brace themselves not only for cold weather but also unseasonable thunderstorms, a forecaster said.

Bloemfontein and most of the southern Free State could expect thunderstorms today. These would spread to KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, the eastern part of the Western Cape and the Northern Cape, said senior SA Weather Services forecaster Puseletso Mofokeng.

People in these provinces would experience thunderstorms and lightning in addition to bitter cold.

Light snow could be expected over Barkly East and Matatiele, on the northeastern mountains of Eastern Cape and the peaks of Lesotho.

Mofokeng said temperatures in Gauteng would be low until Thursday or Friday.
