At this stage there is no evidence that links police to the death of NUM leader Pullman Dlamini, says the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD).

Statements were taken from the policemen who were involved in the case, the ICD said in a statement.

However, it was still trying to get the profiles and statements of other detainees who were in the holding cells at the time of Dlamini's death.

Dlamini, a National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) leader in Matlosana, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after he drove over a policeman's foot during an election campaign in May. He was found dead in police holding cells in Klerksdorp in the North West.

The ICD said the investigation into Dlamini's death was almost complete.

"The post mortem report of the state pathologist has been completed.

"According to the pathologist the cause of death was blunt force to the chest and abdominal trauma as a result of assault," it said.
