Police chief General Bheki Cele is relaxing at home being admitted to hospital earlier in the week for what was described as a routine medical check-up.

Cele had informed him that he was "relaxing at home", Colonel Vishnu Naidoo said on Friday.

Cele reportedly experienced chest pains on Sunday afternoon and went to the Little Company of Mary Hospital, in Groenkloof, but was later taken by ambulance to the Zuid-Afrikaanse Hospital.

He was admitted to the hospital late on Sunday afternoon.

In a statement on Monday, police said he had been admitted for a routine general medical check-up which warranted his staying in the hospital for at least 24-hours.

On Wednesday, Zuid-Afrikaanse Hospital general manager Tienie van den Berg confirmed that Cele was still in the hospital. He could not comment on his condition.

Van den Berg could not be reached for comment on Friday. It was not known when Cele was discharged.

The Public Protector recently accused Cele of improper, unlawful conduct which amounted to maladministration in connection with two controversial building leases, one in Pretoria and the other in Durban.
