City of Tshwane residents must brace themselves for higher bills from the end of August when adjustments will be made to electricity and other rates, says an official.

Service delivery co-ordinator Ndivho Lukhwareni said the council was moving as fast as it could to implement the new tariffs, which "aim to encourage residents to consume less electricity".

Under the revised tariffs, households consuming up to 100 kilowatts of electricity will pay 96 cents a kilowatt hour.

The previous rate was 96 cents an hour for those who consumed up to 50 kilowatts.

"The tariffs encourage less consumption and punish the affluent," said Lukhwareni.

Households consuming more than 600 kilowatts, would spend just over R1.15c for each kilowatt used per hour.

The City of Tshwane would bear a R15 million revenue loss as a result of the newly-revised and approved electricity block tariffs.

According to minutes adopted at the council meeting on Thursday, this was a down from R64m on top of the R84m loss the council had already approved.

The city previously appealed against the National Energy Regulator of SA's approved tariffs as it found them to be "in contrast" with what it proposed in an application sent to Nersa in April.

In November last year, Nersa approved an increase of 20.38 percent for municipalities in the 2011/2012 financial year.
