A councillor has been arrested for allegedly assaulting his fellow ANC members in Hammanskraal, Pretoria, Gauteng police said.

George Matjila was taken into custody on Sunday and charged with assault, Captain Pinky Tsinyane said.

Matjila is a member of the mayoral committee for roads and transport in the City of Tshwane. He was expected to appear in the Moretele Magistrate's Court on Monday.

The incident took place during a meeting held on Saturday.

According to media reports, Matjila organised a ward meeting without informing all ANC members on the local ward council, which was aimed at electing new leaders for ward 95.

A violent fight broke out when the uninvited members arrived and disrupted the proceedings before important decisions could be taken. Several members of the ruling party were allegedly assaulted by Matjila and his supporters.
