Two men were killed by an angry crowd near Mthatha after they tried to rob a shop on Wednesday.

The residents chased and caught the men after they came out of a shop in Ngqeleni at 1pm, Lt-Col Mzukisi Fatyela said.

Full details of the attempted robbery were not immediately available.

The mob beat the robbers with stones and other objects until one of them died. His accomplice was certified dead on arrival at Canzibe Hospital.

Two murder cases had been opened. No arrests were made.
