Livingstone Hospital officials say they are not responsible for the water supply.

The four samples from Framesby, Summerstrand, Korsten and Motherwell were taken from household taps linked directly to the municipal water supply system. At Livingstone Hospital, the sample was taken from a tap in the X-ray unit.

All samples were collected in sterilised containers.

But municipal spokesman Ongama Mtimka said: "The exact location of where the samples were taken is not known, as this opens the questions as to who is responsible ."

Port Elizabeth Hospital complex CEO, Thulane Madonsela, said: "... The results are satisfactory and safe for patients' consumption."
