The fiance of the advocate who was dragged for about 200m by a taxi has appeared briefly in the Randburg Magistrate's Court after handing himself over to police.

Lourens Grobler, 37, was released on R5000 bail. The state did not oppose the bail application.

Grobler faces charges of malicious damage to property, attempted murder and reckless and negligent driving.

Grobler's fiancee, Kim McCusker, was allegedly knocked down by taxi driver Matume Thamage last week. This allegedly followed an accident involving the taxi and the vehicle she and Grobler were travelling in.

A support group set up on Facebook said McCusker was in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

The group had more than 11000 members by late yesterday.

McCusker was at the weekend reportedly taken off a ventilator and, though still in "a lot of pain and incredibly uncomfortable", was able to communicate with her family.

Liad Hadar of Mark Harris Attorneys, which has been appointed to represent the family, said information about her injuries circulated via e-mail yesterday did not come from the family.

"We are protecting her privacy and wouldn't release [such information]. Her condition is the same as it has been, very serious, though she is slightly better," he said.

Thamage, who faces charges of attempted murder and reckless and negligent driving, has been in custody since the incident. He is expected to apply for bail only tomorrow.

Thamage has claimed he did not see McCusker stuck under the vehicle and that he had sped away because he was being assaulted by Grobler.

Thamage claimed that damage estimated at R1500 was caused to his vehicle.

He said he himself had sustained bruises after allegedly being assaulted by Grobler.

Magistrate Vincent Pienaar warned Grobler not to make contact with Thamage.

"If you breach any of these conditions, I'm going to lock you up," said Pienaar.
