Vaal rapist George Jabu Khanye was sentenced to five life terms plus 85 years in prison by the Vereeniging Magistrate's Court, according to a newspaper report.

"It strikes a blow at our claim to be a civilised community. Your victims suffered serious psychological damage, which resulted in one of them being divorced by her husband," the Sowetan quoted Magistrate Rita Willemse saying during sentencing.

Khanye, 36, was convicted on September 6 after he pleaded guilty to raping and robbing six women. The crimes were committed between November 13, 2009 and February 25, 2010.

He was out on parole when he committed the offences. In 2002, he was jailed for 12 years for rape and was released on parole in 2008. He promised his victims jobs and took them to secluded areas.
