The 42-year-old British citizen attacked by a great white shark while swimming at Fish Hoek in Cape Town last week is conscious and stable, a hospital spokeswoman said on Monday.

"Mr Cohen is conscious and in a stable condition," Constantiaberg Medi-Clinic spokeswoman Faye Kariem said.

Michael Cohen was attacked around midday on Wednesday last week. The shark bit off his right leg above the knee and part of his left leg below the knee.

Gregg Oelofse, head of the City of Cape Town's environmental policy and strategy department, said a great white had been in Fish Hoek bay throughout Monday and the weekend.

"We have a lot of sharks in False Bay today. A white shark has been in Fish Hoek bay the whole day. It was there throughout the weekend. The beaches are closed and we will remain on high alert until the situation changes."

A shark flag, indicating the presence of a great white, was flying when Cohen entered the water.

According to shark spotters they had warned Cohen about the dangers of swimming in the bay on several previous occasions.
