A Pretoria police captain has accused his fellow officers of trying to cover up a suspected drunk-driving incident.

Captain Castor Sabu, who says his own car was rear-ended by an Audi in the accident last week, has lodged a complaint against a constable and a private ambulance service.

He accused them of failing to test the Audi driver, an employee of the Department of Justice, even though he "could not stand up straight" and had bloodshot eyes.

Sabu on Wednesday lodged a complaint of defeating the ends of justice. He claimed he saw a can of beer in the lap of the Audi driver. "I realised the driver was under the influence," said Sabu in his statement.

He called police to the scene, while the other driver called a private ambulance.

He said paramedics arrived first and ignored his protests that the driver should not be treated before police arrived.

When the constable arrived, Sabu said, he ignored requests for the driver to be tested. The ambulance then left with the driver.

Sabu said he wanted an investigation into the conduct of the constable and the ''cover-up by the ambulance personnel".

The Audi driver told the Sunday Times he had not been drunk and denied any cover-up.
