The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) is organising a rebuild of tornado-hit houses in Duduza.

One thousand young volunteers in will start the rebuild of 692 houses, 174 of which need complete rebuilding and the remaining 518 to be repaired.

The organisation says 300 of the 1 000 volunteers completed an NYDA Accelerated Artisans and Skills Training Programme in March, which covered electrical, plumbing, boiler making, welding and air conditioning and refrigeration training.

This, the organisation says, qualifies them in the construction industry.

The remaining 700 are new recruits.

The young volunteers will receive a monthly stipend, free transportation and meals.

The NYDA says this initiative forms part of the National Youth Service Programme which is aimed at engaging young people in activities that develop and benefit their communities whilst acquiring meaningful and accredited skills that can enable them to access economic opportunities for their sustainable livelihoods.

The briefing for the rebuild takes place this Friday, October 14 at the Multipurpose Community Centre in Duduza at 10am.

Refilwe Mphane, media liason for the NYDA, says the rubble will be cleared out Friday and the rebuild starts Monday October 17.
