An East London man has been arrested and two more suspects are on the run after allegedly trying to rape a census worker.

The incident happened in Quigney on Friday when the woman collected a census questionnaire.

She said when she arrived at the house, one of the occupants said he did not fill in the form because he needed help with it.

She sat down to assist the man when three "half-naked" men came into the room. They told her to take her clothes off.

"I said no, but they said that they would rape me," she said.

The men, one allegedly flashing money, grabbed her and started to strip off her clothes. Another, she said, had a syringe and was trying to jab it into her arm.

Her phone rang but she could not answer it. The woman said someone then called one of the men outside the house and he went to open the door.

She used the opportunity to run away.
