The Communication Workers' Union has railed against any moves to "privatise" fixed line operator Telkom after news that the semi-privatised company intended to sell 20% to a South Korean company for R4.7-billion.

The union said in a statement yesterday that it had never been consulted about the reported sale.

"There has never been a meeting in terms of the collective agreement that we have with the company to be consulted on issues of operational and governance."

CWU said it supported the sentiment of its federation, Cosatu, not to support the privatisation of Telkom which still has 39% state ownership.

"If we allow privatisation in Telkom, the majority of workers by this time next year will lose their jobs. We will never support the privatisation of Telkom by these capitalists in the interest of maximising profit for themselves."

Industry analysts said the R4.7-billion deal would significantly boost Telkom's aspirations of being the country's leading convergence player.

Telkom announced on Friday that it was in talks with KT Corporation that could result in the sale of a 20% stake.
