Two security guards have been injured in a cash-in-transit heist on the Potchefstroom road near Vlakplaas, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.

An unknown number of robbers rammed the cash-in-transit van off the road with a silver Mercedes-Benz on Monday morning at 7.30am, said Lt-Col Katlego Mogale.

"The cash van overturned and the suspects disarmed the two security guards and fled the scene with cash in a white Volvo, a white minibus and an Audi A4," she said.

The Star newspaper reported on Tuesday that the robbers had tried to open the back of the van with explosives.

Protea Coin chief executive Petrus van Niekerk told the daily that the guard in the passenger seat was seriously injured, and that the driver was injured less seriously.

Mogale said they both remained in hospital on Tuesday morning and that no arrests had been made.
