Disgruntled residents of Ledig, near Sun City, should refrain from taking the law into their own hands, the Congress of SA Trade Unions says.

"We also call for the immediate arrest of all who incited the poor community by publicly calling for the burning of those who allegedly misused or pocketed community funds," said spokesman Madito wa ga Molebalwa, of the Moses Kotane local branch in the North West.

He said in a statement it was suspected that "some politicians" used the opportunity to score "cheap politic[al] points and settle political scores".

Violent protests at Ledig broke out on Sunday night when 300 people gathered at the local tribal office to complain about what they described as corruption and maladministration. They stoned police and security guards, and petrol-bombed the houses of three council members.

Molebalwa appealed to locals to let school pupils write their exams without disruption.

Thirteen protesters were arrested on Sunday and another 23 on Tuesday. Police spokeswoman Captain Amanda Funani said Ledig was calm on Wednesday.
