An elderly man collapsed and died in hospital later while attending the ANC centenary celebrations in Bloemfontein on Saturday afternoon, police said

A younger man, believed to be in his 20s, attending the same event also collapsed and was taken to Pelonomi Hospital in the city.

Police spokesman, Colonel Vishnu Naidoo, said both men were attending a public function at the Mangaung Outdoor Sports Centre.

"About 6000 people were at the venue for an event that was part of the centenary celebration," Naidoo said.

ANC national spokesperson, Jackson Mthembu, earlier said the elderly man had been believed to be a voluntary musician and had collapsed on the stage.

"We are devastated by the death of this voluntary artist from one of the top bands [performing at the celebration]", Mthembu said in his statement.

Police said the elderly man died after he had been taken to the Pelonomi Hospital.
