A man was stabbed to death while trying to stop a fight between two people in George, Western Cape police said on Wednesday.

Johannes Bruiners, 40, tried to save a woman who was being assaulted by a man in Bruce Street around 2pm on Tuesday, Captain Malcolm Pojie said.

"Bruiners intervened when the man hit the woman with the handle of a knife," he said.

"In a fit of rage, the attacker turned to Bruiners and stabbed him in the neck."

He was declared dead on the scene after paramedics tried to resuscitate him.

It was not immediately clear why the 29-year-old man was attacking the woman.

Pojie said police arrested him on the scene after they were alerted. The woman, 30, did not suffer serious wounds.

The man was expected to face a murder charge in the George Magistrate's Court on Friday.
