"The operation was conducted [on Friday night] in Moroka, Lenasia, Lenasia South, Naledi, Jabulani and Dobsonville clusters," Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said.

The operation took place between 9pm and 4am.

The 227 people included those arrested for attempted rape, dealing in liquor, dealing in dagga, possession of unlicensed firearms, stolen vehicles, stolen property and driving under the influence of alcohol, he said.

Two shebeens were closed down and no one was injured.

Makhubela said those arrested were expected to appear in the Vereeniging, Lenasia, Protea and Roodepoort magistrate's courts on Monday.
