The N2 highway near Grabouw in the Western Cape was closed on Monday following community unrest in the area, police said.

A protesting crowd also set alight two classrooms at Groenberg High School in the town, smashed windows and ransacked a storeroom, police spokesman Captain Frederick van Wyk said.

"The situation is very tense," he said.

Van Wyk said police were trying to establish what sparked the unrest that apparently spilled onto the highway in the night leading to the road closure.

Police were still at the scene on Monday.
